Karachi: Wildcard entrant Abid Ali Akbar elbowed out favorite Mohammad Abid while fourth seed Shahzad Khan dispatched second seed Yasir Khan in the men’s singles semifinals in Kulsum Saifullah Khan National Tennis Tournament on Thursday at PTF Complex in Islamabad.
In the first semifinal match, Abid Ali Akbar used aggressive baseline and attack game to beat the top seed Mohammad Abid in straights sets recording a 6-2, 6-3 victory to secure an unanticipated place in the summit clash of the tournament.
In another upset, Shahzad Khan found a tough opponent in Yasir Khan and dropped a set before recording a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 triumph.
In the first ladies singles semifinals, second seed Alina Aftab was pitted against former Pakistan No. 1 and National Champion, Sarah Mahboob Khan. Alina’s off-pace high balls confused Sarah and although she was serving for the first set at 5/4 but her serve was broken and the score reached 5-5. Alina held her serve to lead for the first time 6-5 and broke Sarah to win the set 7-5.
Sarah, however, put a lid on her unforced errors and won the second set convincingly by 6-1. In the third and final set Sarah improved her first serve ratio and started her natural game and won the third set and the match 5-7, 6-1, 6-3.
In the second semifinal, favorite Sara Mansoor was up against seed No. 3 Mahin Aftab. However, Sara Mansoor used pinpoint topspin game to win in style by 6-1, 6-0 score.
In Under 18 semifinals, promising youngster Mohammad Muzammil had little problem against Haris Irfan ul Haq and won his match 7-6, 6-1. Muzammil will meet unseeded Mohammad Raza Sawani in the final.
