Karachi: Staff shortage in Pakistan Railways’ Hassan Hospital Karachi is forcing thousands of patients to get treatment in private hospitals.
Reliable sources told PPI that the low performance of 120-bed Hassan Railway Hospital established at Cantt Station Karachi for treatment of families of railway employees has badly affected patients. The major reason of that is retirement of many senior doctors and paramedical staff that has also caused staff shortage.
They said federal government had imposed ban on new recruitment in federal departments since last two years that is causing problems for not only patients, but also for the administration to run the hospital.
They said various posts are lying vacant in the hospital after the retirement of senior doctors and staff. The Pakistan Railways allocates millions of rupees every year for this hospital to provide better health facilities to its employees and their families but the staff shortage is a big issue to ensure this objective.
The sources said the government on one hand is giving monthly medical allowances to retired and serving Pakistan Railway employees, while on the other hand these employees are also availing the facilities from railway hospitals.
An officer of hospital on condition of anonymity said the hospital has been facing severe shortage of medicines due to lack of fund as only admitted patients are being provided medicines, while the visiting Outpatient Department (OPD) are not given any medicines.
He said railways have about 13,000 employees in Karachi Division who are supposed to seek medical facilities from this hospital, but it does not have even cheap cough syrup or syringes for its visiting patients.
He said different departments of hospital are running successfully in hospital like; gynaecological, eye, vaccination, dental and other facilities. However, the hospital urgently needs specialist doctors to make functional other departments in order to provide better health facilities to railway employees and their families.
The sources further said the attendance of OPD has increased from 80 to 100 per day. They said emergency centre has been established in hospital to cater to the emergencies-related cases. The railway dispensaries have also been established in different districts of province to provide health facilities employees.
X-ray and lab test facilities are available in the Pakistan Railways Hassan Hospital.
