KARACHI: Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui has on Monday constituted a joint team to monitor the violations of traffic rules and regulations of heavy vehicles at two check posts on Northern Bypass.
“The team will check vehicle papers, fitness and driving licenses. The team will comprise officers of motor vehicle excise department, traffic police, provincial transport authority and regional transport authority,” the commissioner said while presiding a high-level meeting at his office to review the vehicular traffic causing traffic congestions in the city while these vehicles enter the city.
He said traffic jam in Karachi was not a new matter rather a chronic issue. It was decided in the meeting that heavy vehicles will be allowed to ply within the city from 11pm to 6am as this was being done as per orders issued by the Supreme Court.
Siddiqui said these plans were being decided with the mutual understanding of transporters and DIG traffic police. He further said ten wheelers or trawlers could enter the city from 11 pm to 6 pm. Oil tankers small or big could not enter the city from 5pm to7 pm.
DIG Traffic police in the meeting suggested Maripur truck stand to be shifted to Superhighway.
This should be noted that ten and eighteen wheelers trucks are yet bustling in the city with no restrictions. Specially, during the ongoing repairing work on Jam Sadiq Bridge whole the heavy traffic of Korangi Industrial Area has been diverted towards Korangi Crossing choking the area for hours in a day. There is also no arrangement or alternative in case it rains and Malir River submerges Korangi Road on its way.
