Karachi: Renowned social worker and Chairman Ansar Burney Trust International Ansar Burney on Thursday said Thalassemia disease is more painful than HIV/AIDS and hepatitis as it affects family members mentally and economically.
He expressed these views while addressing a Thalassemia awareness walk organized by Muhammadi Blood Bank and Thalassemia Centre in connection World Thalassemia Day at Karachi Press Club.
He said: “We should not forget these children after celebrating world thalassemia day, but love them like our own kids.” He said struggle to eliminate thalassemia is a noble cause. He urged healthy persons especially youth to donate blood on regular basis to save lives of Thalassaemic children.
Consultant Haematology Dr Muhammad Usman said six percent population of the country is carrier of thalassemia minor gene while about 9,000 children are being diagnosed with thalassemia major every year.
He said problem begins when two thalassemia minors get marry which carry 25 percent risk of birth of thalassemia major kid. He said every couple should be tested before mirage to prevent from this disease. He said only solution is to adopt a thalassemia prevention program.
