Two killed, two Thalassemia screening begins in New Karachi hospital

Karachi: Thalassemia screening facility for couples willing to marry has started in Sindh Government Hospital New Karachi on the directive of Health Minister Sindh Dr Sagheer Ahmed.

Medical Superintendent, Sindh Government Hospital New Karachi, Dr Asif Zaman said as many as 500 Thalassemia screening tests were carried out from 25 June till date. He said Hussani Blood Bank was coordinating with the hospital administration for Thalassemia tests.

He said around 40 Thalassema screening tests are conducted in the hospital on daily basis; while a total 500 tests were carried out and all proved negative.

Dr Asif Zaman said Thalassemia is a painful blood disorder in which affected children depends on transfused blood for their whole life. He stressed the need of Thalassemia screening of youngster including girls & boys willing to marry before their wedding to prevent their coming generation from this disease.

He advised the Thalassemia minor carrier patients to avoid marriage with other minor carrier to avoid further complication and transferring the disease to next generation.

He informed that on the directives of Provincial Health Minister Dr Sagheer Ahmed on the occasion of a seminar held to mark World Thalassemia Day, the Executive District Officer Health Karachi Dr Zafar Ejaz had announced the beginning of Thalassemia screening test facility in the hospital which has now started practically.
