UoK society rejects meager compensation for Dr Rehman

KARACHI: University of Karachi Teachers Society’s President Prof Dr Jamil Qazmi and General Secretary Dr Haris Shoaib on Thursday rejected the Sindh government’s approval of Rs 1.5 million out of Rs 15 million for assassinated Prof Dr Waheed-ur-Rehman’s family.

Talking to PPI, Dr Jamil said Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah had assured the Society delegation of issuing Rs 15 million within two weeks in a meeting held at CM House last May. He said initially, Sindh government had announced Rs 30 million for the victim family of Dr Rehman but later they reduced it to Rs 15 million due to funds shortage, which was accepted by the Society, but after the one and half month government had granted only Rs 1.5 million compensation which was rejected.

Dr Haris Shoaib said the government’s sudden changing behaviour towards teaching society would not be tolerated. He said the government should realize the loss of Dr Rehman’s family and must issue it decided compensation.

Dr Qazmi warned the government if their demands are not met soon, they will launch a pendown strike in the university after the holy month of Ramazan.

Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Association’s President, Dr Naimatullah, said the Society will be fully supported by them at every step until the government realizes its responsibility.
