Walk to create awareness about hepatitis


Karachi:   Hepatitis Prevention & Control Programme (Chief Minister’s Initiatives) Sindh has organized an awareness walk in connection of World Hepatitis Day on Saturday at Karachi.

The walk was started from Civil Hospital Karachi OPD Department, and passed through Jamia Cloth, Dow Medical University of Sciences and culminated at administration Block of CHK.

A large number doctors, nurses, paramedical staff, civil society and citizens participated in awareness walk held in the eve of World Hepatitis Day would be observed 28 July 2014 world-widely including Pakistan.

The participants of walk were carrying banners and placards inscribed with different awareness messages like; Preventive is better than cure and Hepatitis affects everyone, everywhere.

Provincial Manager, Hepatitis Prevention & Control Programme (Chief Minister’s Initiatives), Dr Zahoor Baloch while addressing the participants of walk, said the aim of walk was to provide awareness to people about prevention from this disease.

He informed that 150,000 Hepatitis C cases have been registered by Hepatitis Programme since 2009, while 18,000 Hepatitis B and 3800 patients with Hepatitis D have also been registered so far. He further informed that around 1000 to 1200 new patients with hepatitis are being reported annually in Sindh province.

He said there are 55 centers are running in the province under Hepatitis Prevention & Control Programme providing screening, vaccination, treatment and preventive educations facilities to hepatitis patients throughout the province. He informed that barber shops, beauty salons and reused syringes are major sources of hepatitis spread in the society.

Patron-In Chief Sindh Paramedical Staff Welfare Association Akhlaq Ahmed Khan and General Secretary Sindh Doctors Welfare Association (SDWA) Dr Nawaz Ali Mallah also attended the awareness walk.

Sources said that due to Eid-ul-Fitr health authorities and Hepatitis Prevention & Control Programme Chief Minister Initiatives management have decided to celebrate the World Hepatitis Day two days earlier because the government has already announced Eid holidays.
