18 killed in Lyari fighting, police encounter


Karachi: At least 18 people were killed in an armed clash between two rival gang war groups in Lyari and rangers encounter in Garden area of the city on Monday. According to police, the clash started after Shiraz Zikri, the brother of Ghaffar Zikri, who is a key figure of the gang war, was killed during a joint operation conducted by police and Rangers personnel in Lyari last night.

The Jhatpat Market of Lyari became a battleground after the incident and two groups – Baba Ladla and Uzair Baloch – attacked each other with hand grenades, rockets and guns. The firing was so intense that even rescue operations remained suspended in the area for more than one hour.

According to Rangers spokesman, three Rangers personnel were also injured in the cracker attack lobbed by armed men in Lyari.

The bodies and injured were shifted to Civil Hospital Karachi. Moving scenes were witnessed outside the emergency of Civil Hospital Karachi, where people were rushing here and there to inquire about the condition of their relatives.

The victims were identified as Nabeel, 20, Sattar, 15, Amina Khan, 40, Azan Anwar, 10, Aran Khan, 5, Nabil, 17, Amir Hussain, 10, Abdul Ghaffar, 50, Syed Ahmed, 28, Fazila, 24, Shahzad, 30, Amir Hussain, 12, Amina Bibi, 50, and Abdul Malik, 37 and Nabil.

The injured were identified as Amna, 7, Altaf, 22, Ahmed Ali, 12, Ibrahim, 35, Abdul Aleem, 55, Sakeena, 40, Farzana, 45, Musadaq, 35, Fahim, 21, Amna, 50, Imran, 20, Rabia, 40, Farida, 19, Sajda, 19, Haseena Begum, 55, Jawaid, 45, Abdul Majid, 36, Faiz, 40, Wajid Hussain, 26, Khadija, 35, Rashid 28, Zabad Hussain, 18, Farzana, 40 and Jawaid, 45.

Talking to PPI in Civil Hospital Emergency, a weeping boy, Mohammad Ali, said that her mother, Amina Bibi, was killed in the attack as she went outside to buy food for them. He said that they were peaceful citizens but despite his mother was brutally murdered by the criminals.

He said that neither police nor rangers were present in the area despite tense situation after the killing of Ghaffar Zikri’s brother last night. “Every resident of the area knew after his murder that some reaction will come from the rival group but it was only the law enforcing authorities that fail to anticipated situation and remained missing during the clashes.”

Meanwhile, several residents of Lyari staged protest outside Karachi Press Club and Emergency Ward of Civil Hospital. They demanded of the government to take stern action against people involved in these attacks and bring peace and clam to their area. They also chanted slogans against Sindh government.

In another incident, rangers claimed to have killed two Lyari ganwar criminals during an encounter in Usmanabad area of the city.

According to rangers spokesman, a targeted raid was carried out in Usmanabad area on Wednesday morning. “Seeing rangers, gangsters opened fire and after an exchange of fire, two notorious target killers namely Adil alias Badal and Naseen alias Eppi affiliated with People’s Amn Committee (Baba Ladla Group) were killed, while their accomplice Yasir was arrested.”

He said that 10 weapons, including 3 SMGs, Uni Barrel Rocket Launcher, 3 Rifles, MP-5, 3 pistols, 8 grenades and large quantity of magazines and mixed ammo recovered.
