Karachi: At least eight people were killed and 10 others injured when armed snipers opened indiscriminate firing on a shrine in Karachi on Sunday.
Police and rescue sources said some six armed men riding motorcycles came to the shrine of Meharban Ali Shah alias Jalali Baba in Baldia Town number 12 and opened firing on people present there to attend a Mehfil-Samma. The attackers wearing crash helmets later fled.
The bodies and injured were brought to the Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK). The deceased included a two-years-old girl, Zainab. Some of the victims were identified as Dilbar, Nazeer, Ishaq, Essa and Nazar Muhammad. The injured also included women, said hospitals sources, adding the condition of three injured was critical.
The police said the attackers also threw a grenade before firing with automatic weapons. They said the shrine belonged to a retired DSP of police, Tikka Khan.
Heavy contingents of police and rangers reached the shrine and cordoned off nearby areas.
