FAPUASA announces one-day strike


Karachi: Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Association (FAPUASA) here Thursday announced to observe a one-day strike on February 11, 2014 in all universities of Sindh, whereas in all other provinces a two-hour token strike will be organized to show the solidarity with the teachers of the Universities of Sindh.

According to details a meeting of FAPUASA (Pakistan) was conducted in University of Karachi chaired by Dr. Ehsan Sharif, President FAUASA.

The meeting discussed the proposed legislations in provincial assumption, the problem and prospects with HEC, the growing financial crisis in universities, SAARC meeting Associations, FAPUASA elections 2014, and the issue of NOC in Sindh Universities.

It was unanimously decided that a protest will be staged in the University of Karachi, Silver Jubilee Gate, on January 24, 2014 at 11: 00am, which is being jointly organized by the FAPUSA Sindh chapter along with Karachi University and NED University chapters.

It was also resolved that “One Day Strike” will be observed on February 11, 2014 in all Universities of Sindh, whereas in all other provinces a two hours token strike will be organized to show the solidarity with the teachers of the Universities of Sindh.

The further decided to organize a ” Grand General Body Meeting of FAPUSA” of all Universities Faculty in the first week of March at the campus of Peshawar University, where final decision on the fate of respective Universities Amendment Act will be discussed.

The moot condemned the Sindh Government’s tactical delay in resolving the issue, related to the teachers. It said the university teachers are determined not to compromise on the autonomy of universities of Pakistan.

The meeting also discussed the role of HEC in Pakistan and recommended there should not be any multi-layered system for the fund disbursement in the universities of Pakistan.

President FAPUASA said,” We reject monthly disbursement system of funds by HEC. It should be on annual basis to allow respective syndicate to act accordingly in the composition of their budgets. He condemned unnecessary interruption of HEC, as well as government in recruitments in university at all levels.

FAPUASA demanded financial, administrative and academic autonomy of the universities and strength of Public Sector Universities in the country. It asked the universities in Public Sector be given bailout packages and financial burden must not be shifted to students and poor parents.

FAPUASA will soon organize SAARC level conference of Academic Staff Associations to condemn the commercial and reo-liberal approaches being adopted by Provincial and Federal Governments of the country.
