Karachi: Sindh Blood Transfusion Authority (SBTA) on Friday sealed four more illegal blood banks in different areas of Karachi city and as such total 16 blood banks had been closed across the Sindh province so far.
Secretary SBTA Dr Zahid Hasan Ansari said SBTA started crackdown against blood banks operating illegally across the province on war footing. He said strict action would be taken against those who are not following the rule and regulation of SBTA.
He said crackdown against illegal blood banks has been started in province on the directives of Governor Sindh Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan and Secretary Health Sindh Iqbal Durrani. He vowed to continue crackdown against illegal blood banks and especially against those who are not following the instructions and criteria of SBTA.
He said SBTA has sealed four blood banks on 21st February in the city including Taj Voluntarily Blood Bank Korangi Crossing, Life Care Blood Bank Kala Pul, Mother Care Blood Bank Manzoor Colony and Al-Faisal Blood Bank F.B Area.
Dr Ansari said SBTA is receiving complaints that the blood banks established in front of big hospitals of the city that are running on commercial basis and minting money from poor patients and their attendants. He said SBTA has finalized a plan to take action against those who are running bloods banks on commercial basis in the city.
He said blood banks should equipped with refrigerators, analyser readers, microscopes, water baths, blood bank coaches, generators, centrifuge machinery, haemoglobin meters and other equipment, otherwise special monitoring teams would cancel their licenses.
He urged the public to obtain blood only from registered blood banks and point out those who are selling unsafe blood illegally in any area of province.
