Karachi law and order implementation case: Police report says crime declined after operation started

KARACHI: Target killings have declined by 56 percent after the targeted operation in Karachi. Around 7325 accused including 115 target killers, 285 murderers, 51 terrorists, 71 kidnappers, 152 extortionists were arrested by law enforcement agencies during the ongoing targeted operation in the city.

This figures were given in a report titled “Analysis of impact of targeted operation in Karachi” submitted to the Supreme Court of Pakistan by Karachi police on Tuesday. The report stated that since the inception of targeted operation murder cases in the city have declined by 20 percent while target killing cases by 56 percent and street crime by 3 percent.

According to the report, before the operation almost 2142 people were murdered in Karachi violence incidents in 2013 including 150 in January, 132 in February, 128 in March, 107 in April, 111 in May, 107 in June, 93 in July, 101 in August and 119 in September. However, after start of operation, the figures show that the city had seen a drop in targeted killings as 77 such cases were reported in October, 56 in November 61 in December, 89 in January 2014, 59 in February.

The report said that during the operation 601 accused involved in murder cases of previous and ongoing year were arrested, including 356 accused of murder cases this year, 32 proclaimed offenders in murder cases, 213 absconders in murder cases. Interrogations of 356 murderer accused have led to the detection of 596 murder cases.

The report showed that complaints of extortion had also decreased during the operation. 975 complaints were received regarding extortion and 308 FIRs were registered since the operation started in the city. Around 119 cases of extortion were detected and 150 accused involved in extortion arrested.

The report revealed that 57 terrorists were arrested, out them 46 are in prison and 3 are under police custody. Karachi has seen a slight drop in kidnapping for ransom cases in January 2014. 72 accused were arrested, out of them 67 are in prison and 4 under police custody.

The report said that a total of 9195 accused were charge-sheeted, including 216 accused in murder cases, 115 in target killing cases, 40 in explosive act, 67 in kidnapping for ransom cases, 122 in extortion cases, 270 in robberies, 235 in street crime, 2787 for possessing illegal arms, 1725 in narcotic cases and 3618 in other crimes.

The report stated that a total of 393 cases were filed in Anti-terrorism courts during ongoing operation. It said that 437 accused involved in heinous crimes including murder, kidnapping for ransom, extortion and other cases were convicted by trail courts during the ongoing operation.
