KARACHI: Spokesman for Additional Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Karachi on Tuesday said that the police have still not received new bulletproof jackets and armed personnel carriers (APCs) despite assurances from Sindh government.
It is pertinent to mention here that the killing rate of policemen in Karachi has reached alarming level as 31 policemen have been killed during targeted attacks by criminal elements in the 35 days of 2014.
Talking to PPI over telephone, the spokesman, Atique Shaikh, said that the approval for 1,000 bulletproof jackets and 100 APCs was given in a meeting at CM House, which was presided over by Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah and was also attended by IGP Sindh Shahid Nadeem Baloch.
He said that the Karachi police had only 1,315 bulletproof jackets and 36 APCs for 27,000 policemen in Karachi. “Majority of these bulletproof jackets are used by cops guarding VIPs.”
He said that the morale of the police personnel is high but it was responsibility of the department to safeguard their lives. He said that investigations were going on in order to reveal hands behind these killings.
“This is not the first time that police is being targeted in the city, but this time, we will not tolerate these attacks at any cost and criminal behind these attacks will be brought to justice.”
