KARACHI: Sindh High Court (SHC) on Monday directed a petitioner to file amended petition seeking appointment of Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Pervaiz Kayani as Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee after his retirement.
The petitioner advocate Moulvi Iqbal Haider submitted before the court that office of the chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee has been lying vacant since retirement of the then chairman Gen Khalid Shameem Wynne.
He said that Gen Kayani, who is set to retire on November 28, should be appointed as chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee because of his prime role as chief of army staff.
He said that Gen Kayani was appointed as the chief of army staff on 29 November 2007 and his role for restoration of judiciary, supremacy of democracy and curbing terrorism has been highly appreciated.
Besides, he had served on many key posts including Director-General of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), and director of the Directorate-General of Military Operations (DGMO), he added.
The petitioner prayed to the court to direct respondents-ministry of Law, justice and parliamentary and secretary defence to appoint him Chairman Joint Chief of Staff Committee after his retirement.
A division bench of SHC, headed by Justice Faisal Arab, who was seized with the hearing of the petition, directed petitioner to remove the name of Gen Kayani as respondent and file amended petition.
