SHC seeks details of successful technocrat Senators

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Friday directed law officer of Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to place before it the documents regarding qualification of successful candidates on technocrat seats in Senate.

A division bench headed by Chief Justice Maqbool Baqar was seized with the hearing of petition filed by Abdul Qayyum Soomro, who assailed the order of ECP declaring him ineligible for a technocrat seat in the Senate.

Advocate Farooq H Naek, representing petitioner submitted that Abdul Qayyum Soomro was elected Senator from Sindh, replacing Dr Hafeez Sheikh, on a technocrat seat. He said that being highly qualified and eligible for holding the Senate seat as a technocrat Soomro filed nomination papers on March 7, 2013 for technocrat seat reserved for the province and his nomination papers were accepted by ECP.

Later, he said, ECP disqualified Soomro as a technocrat for not revealing his source of income and tax documents. He requested the court to declare the order of ECP unlawful and set it aside.

During hearing, Abdullah Hanjrah law officer of ECP requested the court for one week time for filing documents regarding qualification of successful candidates of the Senate on seats reserved for technocrats.

The bench directed him to submit relevant documents along with requisite summary of all members sitting in senate on seats allocated for technocrats. The bench adjourned the hearing of case till March 11.
