Karachi: Punjab and Navy won their matches on the second day with contrasting results in the ongoing First Brigadier (R) Manzoor Hussain Atif Memorial Hockey Tournament at the Sargodha Hockey Stadium, Sargodha on Monday.
Punjab outclassed Railways registering a convincing 3-0 triumph. Mohammad Rizwan scored two field goals in the 19th and 39th minutes to play pivotal role in Punjab’s triumph. Meanwhile, Hafiz Shahbaz scored the third goal in the 47th minute.
Railways, which are playing a national tournament after a lapse of almost two decades, played well in the first half but lost their rhythm in the second. They also failed to capitalize on the three penalty corners they got during the match.
Meanwhile, Navy recovered from 0-2 down to eventually beat PAF 3-2 after a thrilling encounter.
After a barren first half, it was PAF who broke the ice in the 42nd minute through Mohammed Shahbaz’s field goal. Mohammed Fiaz scored a field goal in the 49th minute to give PAF 2-0 lead.
However, Navy bounced back in the match strongly with Asad Aziz leveling score-line with two goals in the 54th and 65th minutes. Both goals were scored on penalty corners. In the 68th minute Mohammed Asif scored a field goal to take the lead which remained intact till the referee blew the final whistle.
The last match of the day, which was played between Army and WAPDA-B, ended in a 1-1 draw. Army scored the first goal in the 13th minute on a penalty corner, which was converted by their captain Mohammed Imran. They were leading 1-0 at the half time and maintained their dominance over their opponent till the 62nd minute when WAPDA’s forwards passed through their defense and Rana Umair scored a beautiful goal to level the score.
On Tuesday, WAPDA-A will face Police while Navy will take on NBP. PIA will play against Army in the last match of the day.
