Karachi: Renowned skin disease specialist, Dr Qamar Iqbal, on Tuesday said substandard cold creams and lotions for dry skin could prove to be harmful for patients suffering from skin diseases in winter season.
He told PPI that ratio of skin diseases mostly increases with intensity of weather in the country. He said the ratio of skin diseases is high in those people who had oily and dry skin as compared to normal skin people. He said cold cream brands and lotions may prove to be harmful for skin disease patients. He suggested the use of natural moisturizers and oils that could be more effective in winter season for dry skin.
He said most common diseases of winter are atopic dermatitis, scabies, seborrhoea dermatitis, keratoderma, eczema and others. He said dry skin problems are also very common during winter. He said poor cleanliness, poverty, industrialization, urbanization and lack of proper awareness about the skin disease are main causes behind widespread skin problems.
Dr Qamar said nature of skin diseases generally changes with climate change in the country. He said there are different kinds of skin diseases in winter as compared to summer. He said around 1200 to 1800 people visit different Out Patient Department (OPD) at Institute of Skin Diseases Hospital Karachi.
He informed that skin disease cases are high in big cities like Karachi, Lahore, Faisalabad and Multan as compared to small cities, towns and villages. He informed some skin disease cases automatically increase in winter season due to cold winds.
He said an MBBS doctors could handle the skin diseases, therefore, people should consult specialist skin disease doctors in case of skin infections. He stressed the need for raising proper awareness among the people about the skin diseases through media and other forums.
He said use of substandard fairness creams, applying henna on hands and use of lenses at beauty parlours and salons are also cause behind emergence of different skin infections among women and men.
He advised the people to remain clean and use hygienic food to prevent themselves from skin diseases in cold weather. He urged the affected persons to stay away from healthy people and do not share your towel with others during disease. He said skin diseases are transferable and they may affect other people.
