KARACHI: The Union of Small and Medium Enterprises (UNISAME) urged the SME units to conduct audit by experts in their units to save energy because producing energy is more costly than saving energy.
UNISAME endorses the energy efficiency project of Espire which has two components namely the Energy and Green productivity and welcomes the much needed programmes in Pakistan at the behest of the government of Pakistan.
President UNISAME Zulfikar Thaver speaking at the energy saving press conference at a local hotel thanked the government of
Germany for initiating and sponsoring the energy saving project in Pakistan and assigning the task to BFZ GMBH of Germany who are working on the project along with international organizations and local partners from trade associations of hosiery, towel, readymade garments, auto parts and leading businessmen.
Thaver said this project is a feather in the cap of the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA). The industry support cell of SMEDA is working in collaboration with BFZ the principal consultants and JICA, GIZ, BFZ, APO,SES and UNIDO. SMEDA is offering sectoral services and is also serving individual SMEs and has made the first SME policy. It is a policy making body and advises the government from time to time by way of suggestions, recommendations to facilitate, motivate, support and encourage the SMEs he added.
He said 55 units have benefited as they have been facilitated and 44 more in the process. Besides SMEDA has taken major initiatives in trainings and creating linkages between academia and industry and developing best practices manuals..
Elaborating on the importance of energy saving he stressed the need for energy savings and productivity improvement and explained that after implementing the suggestions and recommendations of the energy audit by experts industries would be able to save up to 25% of energy and this would reflect in the energy bills.
There is waste of energy due to use of heavy motors where less power is required, lack of maintenance, more illumination than required and not shutting off. It is a matter of habit and discipline which needs to be inculcated. The government needs to create awareness and energy saving programmes need to be conducted at all levels to educate the masses to save every single unit of energy
