Confrontation between important institutions harmful

LAHORE: The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Wednesday said timely statement of Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif in the prevailing complex and challenging environment has boosted morale of Army.

Confrontation between important institutions is detrimental for country and economy which has been stabilising after decades, said Dr Murtaza Mughal, President PEW in a statement.

He said that former President Musharraf must be tried for violating the constitution but justice must not only be done, but must be seen to be done.

He demanded action against elements who have been defaming army and allied institutions in the backdrop of treason trial against the former president, otherwise it would result in differences among important stakeholders.

Some of the politicians and so-called intellectuals have been dancing on the tune of adversaries with an aim to destabilise Pakistan, he noted.

A single man cannot do much, those politicians and bureaucrats who reaped benefits during Musharraf’s era should also be brought to justice to reduce impression of selective justice and discrimination.

Blaming some politicians and media outlets for immaturity, he said that no one should be treated like a criminal before proven guilty in the court of law.

Turkish model to deal with the former generals may not work in Pakistan while injustice could hurt the sentiments of common troops, he observed.

Dr Mughal said that armed forces are serious in negotiations with Taliban for the sake of peace.
