Lahore: Federal Minister for Water and Power Khawaja Muhammad Asif has assigned APDA the responsibility of acting as a focal agency to address the apprehensions of provinces over after
distribution. He said that water distribution is a sensitive matter among the federating units, adding that any misunderstanding in this regard can affect the inter-provincial harmony. He asked WAPDA to play the role of a coordinator to forge unity and harmony among the provinces for this purpose.
The Minister for Water and Power underlined the need for putting in place a mechanism to assess veracity of complaints of the provinces regarding water distribution in consultation with all stakeholders. Underlining the significance of water conservation in view of decreasing
per capita water availability in the country, the Minister said that there is a need to make judicious and efficient use of available water resources. He said that immediate practical steps are required to promote culture of water conservation and cut down on water wastage
besides constructing new water reservoirs.
He directed WAPDA to get in touch with the provincial governments and other relevant stakeholders to promote the use of modern and efficient irrigation techniques in addition to running an awareness campaign for water conservation.
