Lahore: Eight persons killed and more than 70 injured in clashes between the Model Town Lahore Police and activists of the Awami tehreek ( Mihaj-jul Quran) here Tuesday. The police have claimed arrest of 40-workers of the Awami tehreek during the operation at Minhajul Quran Secretariat, located in theModel Town Lahore.
As per sources the clash erupted early in the morning today between police and workers of the Awami Tehreek when the police started removing barriers on roads near Minhajul Quran Secretariat. The workers of Awami Tehreek did not tolerate police action and started pelting stones on police, which first hesitated to retaliate but when the situation worsened the police also started baton charge and later started firing during which five workers, two women and a policeman killed, while about 70-persons sustained injuries. The injured persons were shifted to Jinnah Hospital and others.
The clashes between activists of the Awami Tehreek and police continued for eleven hours. The opposition leaders have condemned the incident. However the Chief Minister Punjab Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has ordered judicial probe into the incident.
