Healthcare Bill passage to ensure quality healthcare: PMA

LAHORE: An emergent meeting of Cabinet PMA Sindh was held to here on Monday appreciate the passage of Healthcare Commission Bill by the Sindh Assembly.

The meeting appreciated the role of the committee and the officers of the health department, who worked day and night to bring this dream to reality.

This health commission bill was formulated by the Central council of PMA, and was made an Act in Punjab Assembly in Nov 2010. Since then PMA Sindh under the leadership of Dr Samrina Hashmi had been trying to get it passed from Sindh assembly as well.

It was made an Ordinance by Governor Sindh in May 2013 at the end of the last government in the presence of President PMA Sindh Dr Samrina Hashmi and GS Dr HB Jatoi at the Governor House. Now it is an Act.

A representative of PMA Sindh will be part of the Commission along with the other doctors and government organizations. This Bill will help improve the quality of healthcare services and will help in banning quackery in the Sindh in all its forms.

The bill will also make provisions for the improvement of quality of healthcare services. It will monitor and regulate the quality and standards of the healthcare services developed by government.

The bill will help in accreditation of programs in respect of the healthcare services and grant of accreditation to such healthcare service providers who meet the prescribed criteria and standards.

It will also ensure conducting inquiry and investigations of maladministration, malpractice and failures in the provision of healthcare services and issue consequential advice and orders.

It will also advocate the rights and responsibilities of patients and providers of the healthcare services on a complaint by any aggrieved person or by any aggrieved healthcare service provider;

The Commission, which will be formed as a result of this bill, shall take notice of any case of harassment of healthcare service provider or damage to healthcare establishment property and may refer such a case to the competent forum.

The detail will come within two days. The credit goes to the present Sindh government and its officers, and the office-bearers of PMA Sindh who persistently tried for the recognition and importance of this bill.
