Peshawar: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor, Sardar Mahtab Ahmad Khan chaired the first ever meeting of the senate of the University of Swat held at the Governor’s House, Peshawar on Tuesday and directed the university authorities to expedite work on the developmental activities side by side with working on their merit system so that spending public money could give the desired results for the larger interest of the student community.
The meeting was attended by Vice Chancellor of the University of Swat Prof. Dr. Mohammad Jahanzeb Khan, former chief secretary KPK Ejaz Ahmad Qureshi, ex-VC University of Peshawar Prof. Dr. Qasim Jan, secretaries HED, finance and establishment departments, Chairman Department of Biotechnology Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad Prof. Dr. Zabta Khan, retired judge Sher Mohammad Khan advocate, Dean faculty of management sciences Abdul Wali Khan University Prof. Dr. Zahoorul Haq, Dean department of biological sciences University of Malakand Prof. Dr. Mir Azam Khan and Dean management and information University of Peshawar Prof. Dr. Abdul Qayuum Khan.
The governor stated that students were the future asset of the nation and there would be no compromise on the issue of their future build up. He said the teachers should keep in mind that they had to divert their capacities for making the foundation and base of the students strong enabling them to have a vision towards creative thinking. He opposed extension in the establishment of more and more universities but called for following pure merit without which they could not achieve the real goal.
He said mushroom growth of universities would add nothing constructive to the development of academic standard but there should be strict check and balance in this connection. He said the provincial government was also supporting the idea to have check on the growth of the universities.
He directed for a committee headed by the secretary finance to go through the problems at the University of Swat and to regulate expansion of the universities.
Earlier the governor was briefed in detail on the master plan so far devised for the University of Swat. He was told that Rs. 2.46 billion had been approved for the construction of a campus for the university on which work was underway.
He was also briefed on the students’ statistics, infrastructure, year wise students’ enrolment in 2014-15 and the existing available facilities for the students and faculty members. Future plan for 2015-16 was also explained to the governor.
Later, a draw was arranged in which four names of the members of the senate of the University of Swat were selected for retirement from the senate. Those were former chief secretary KPK Ejaz Ahmad Qureshi, Dean Faculty of management sciences Abdul Wali Khan University Prof. Dr. Zahoorul Haq, retired judge Sher Mohammad Khan advocate and Chairman Department of Biotechnology Qaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad Prof. Dr. Zabta Khan. New members against the same names would be proposed later.
