PESHAWAR: Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce & Industries (FPCCI) Standing Committee on Horticulture and Agri Produce, Chairman Ahmad Jawad said on Thursday that KPK is an extremely fertile land for quality crops, fruit, and vegetables.
Both national and international airlines connected to Peshawar and all of Pakistan are accessible with ease, but still require facilities, and infrastructure were not available for the concerned exporters.
Chairing a meeting at FPCCI Regional Office, it was learnt by the exporters that on daily basis 25 tons vegetables exported off-season and 40 tons vegetables exported in on season from Peshawar airport but it would all manage by one DPP official who inspected the quarantine procedures of the produce which is a matter of great concerned.
SAPS officials at Peshawar airport were charged with the amount from the exporters for scanning their shipments which only happened at Bacha Khan Airport Peshawar regardless it was fixed by the government to facilitate the goods.
Similarly, checking procedure’s of the vegetables shipments by the Custom officials at Peshawar airport may also not up to the standards. Their way of inspection some time injured the certain level of consignment. When scanners are available then there is no need for manual inspection, even if custom officials wanted for manual inspection then “Random sampling procedures” may be adopted as per the SOPs.
Jawad said horticulture exporters of KPK deserved corporation and caring attitude by the custom and SAPS officials. Customs and SAPS officials should have their best to facilitate Pakistani exports.
He also said Ministry of National Food & Security may direct the Department of Plant Protection to appoint more staff at DPP Peshawar office. In this regard, formal letter sent to the Secretary of National Food & Security to facilitate KPK fruit vegetable exporters.
“We must realize the horticulture sector exports contributed in national exchequer and it’s the responsibility of government department’s to help them and facilitate them”. Their procedure should be exporter’s friendly.
He also urged KPK government may also devise export promoted policies for the fruit vegetable exporter’s interims of infrastructure, processing units, modern cold storages under Public Private Partnership mode (PPP) in the upcoming budget.
