Plan for conservation and preservation of Paolo Avitabile Governor Complex, situated at Gor Khatri Archeological Complex

Peshawar: The Directorate of Archaeology and Museums Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has outlined a plan for preservation and conservation of Paolo Avitabile Governor Complex, located at western gate of Gor Khatri Archaeological complex Peshawar.

This was revealed during visit of Advisor to Chief Minister on Archaeology, Musuems, sports, and youth Affairs, Amjad Khan Afridi at the Gor Khatri Archaeological Complex along with Director Archaeology and Museums KP, Dr Abdul Samad. For commissioning of the conservation and preservation plan, a team of specialists of conservation firm Fahim associate’s from Lahore, also visited the Gor Khatri archaeological complex.

The Directorate of Archaeology is also working to preserve and protect other historic buildings and sites across the province and a plan has already been devised in this regard.

The Gor Khatri Complex, a fortified square compound, spread over an area of 25600 square metres, is located on the highest point of Peshawar, where a Mughal-era serai, a historic Gorakshanath temple, Governor Avitabile`s house in Sikh period, a network of cells in the southern and western side of the structure and a fire brigade building dating back to 1917 makes this place a unique archaeological site.

Amjad Afridi while speaking on the occasion stated that a plan has been devised to conserve and preserve the Paolo Avitabile Governor Complex, situated at western gate of the Gor Khatri Archaeological Complex. For this purpose, he informed that a team of specialists of a conservation firm also visited the site.

Advisor to chief minister, while highlighting the historic importance of Gor Khatri, said that government was working on different projects to revive and revitalise the glory of Peshawar by conserving, preserving and reviving its historic buildings, sites, bazaars, monuments and walls.

Director Archaeology and Museums said the conservation and preservation work on historic Gor Khatri Archaeological complex has been continued in full swing as conservation work of upper portion of the wall, eastern side of Gor Khatri was so far completed. He informed that a state of art Peshawar archaeological gallery will be established at the Gor Khatri Peshawar.

Similarly, he informed the Directorate is also working on plan to arrange exhibitions and awareness sessions at the historical structure Sethi House, which is situated close to the Ghanta Ghar (clock tower), Bazaar Kalan and Gor Khuttree in Peshawar’s old walled city. Peshawar’s jewel in the crown, the Mohallah Sethian or Sethi Street, stands as a testament to days gone by when stories of distant lands were narrated over cups of green tea and caravans of traders stopped in the city, while travelling from the Central Asian steppes to the Indian plains.
