Peshawar: A meeting of the standing Committee of Senate on Pakistan Railways (PR), was held at parliament building on Tuesday, which presided over by its chairman Senator Sardar Fateh Mohammad Hassani.
The first agenda item of the meeting was to deliberate upon the Peshawar Bus Rapid Transport System (BRTS), which is priority project of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Isaf led Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government, conceived by KP Board of Investment and Trade.
Besides, the members of the technical committee of Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Pakistan Railways, Federal Minister for Railways, Khawaja Saad Rafique, Senator Mohsin Aziz, vice chairman Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Board of Investment and Trade (KPBoIT), and other high officials of Pakistan Railways, was attended the meeting.
The consultant of the project titled: “Bus Rapid Transport System (BRTS), from Chamkani bypass to Peshawar Hayatabad Industrial Estate, M/S Hasmak.
During the meeting, the consultant gave a comprehensive presentation of the project maintaining that the BRTS has been facilitated on the northern periphery of the rail corridor furthest to the existing rail track and taking into consideration railway safety parameters.
The consultant said feasibility study has not only been exercise in planning engineering or designing for a specific BRT Project, but also what if examination of the rail corridor designated for a conventional train system “heavy rail” for installing a Rapid Transit Bus System avoiding any conflict with existing layout of the track as well as any future rail development en-route.
In the presentation, the consultant emphasized that the bus way has been designed in a manner to allow an addition broad gauge track as well as have a safety allowance of 15.6ft from the centre of the existing track to the centre 2nd track, in case doubling of track on the section is undertaken.
Mohsin Aziz, responding to the queries of the committee, said the bus way doesn’t enter any of two stations Peshawar City and Cantonment and descends clear of the Nothia Rail Road intersection entering upon the section where rail infrastructure doesn’t exist.
KPBOIT Vice chairman furthered said the proposed arrangement of the BRT is not conflict with the railway system on the proposed area. Besides, he added only 3.7km of the bus way has been designed at grade i.e on ground originating from Chamkani Interchange, and assumes an elevated form much ahead of Peshawar city station clearing all vulnerable rail road intersections and rail installations.
Mr Aziz said: “KP government is committed to launch bus service, while it would ready to acquire additional land, if there were required for Peshawar Mass transit bus project. He, however said the there will be no harm to railway infrastructure from building of Peshawar BRT system. He said it is a viable project, which should not be politicized. He said if any aspect of the project was conflicted, then it should be addressed by relevant authorities reciprocally, he stressed.
It was pertinent to mentioning here that a feasibility study was completed for the project, while the infrastructure construction for the proposed MTS would have estimated at Rs.14billion.
