Peshawar: Accepting the appeal of Dr Shakeel) the Commissioner Frontier Crimes Regulation (FCR) on Saturday reduced Dr Shakil Afridi’s sentence by 10 years.
Captain (Retd) Munir Azam, Commissioner FCR announced the decision and reduced Dr Shakeel’s Sentence from 33 years to 23 years and his fine has also been reduced from Rs 320000 to Rs 220000.
FCR court of Political Agent Khyber Agency had convicted Dr Shakeel of treason for alleged ties to militants’ organization Lashkar-e-Islam (LI) and jailed him for 33 years in May 2012 and asked to pay a fine of Rs320, 000.
On his appeal the commissioner Peshawar had referred the case to the court of Political Agent in August last year and ordered retrial of the case however PA again sent the case to FCR commissioner maintaining his old decision of sentencing Dr Shakeel for 33 years.
Samiullah lawyer of Dr Shakeel announced that he would file an appeal in Fata Tribunal against the decision of FCR commissioner saying the decision of reducing the sentence by 10 years is “unjust”. The family of Dr Shakeel also vowed to file an appeal with Fata tribunal for fresh trial.
It is to mention here that Dr Shakeel was arrested after the assignation of Al-Qaeda Chief Osama bin Laden in May 2011 in Abbottabad.
