Polio worker gunned down in Jamrud

Peshawar: A polio worker was shot dead by unknown assailants on his doorstep on Friday here in Ghundi area of tehsil Jamrud, sub-division of Khyber agency, official and local sources confirmed.

The sources said that unknown motorcycle riders equipped with arms called the polio worker, Yousaf s/o Sher khan out of his home and with indiscriminate firing killed him on the spot.

The unidentified killers successfully managed to escape after committing the crime, sources said. Soon after the incident, the administration officials rushed to the scene and shifted the dead body to Jamrud civil hospital for medico-legal formalities, sources said.

The administration then launched a search operation in the area and fifteen suspected were detained and shifted to Jamrud lock up for investigations, sources said. Twelve motorbikes were also seized and impounded in Jamrud, sources said.

No one claimed the responsibility of the event, however, due to security reasons; the administration commenced the polio drive ten days late in the Khyber, sources said.

It is worth mentioning here that nineteen polio positive cases have been detected in Khyber agency in 2013 whereas in the entire FATA this figure is about 61.

The deteriorating law and order situation in Khyber Agency will surely delay and prolong the vaccination campaign in Khyber Agency.
