Youth want participation in peace process

Lahore: Young people have urged the Government of Pakistan as well as the provincial governments and the political administration of FATA to ensure meaningful participation of the young people particularly from conflict affected areas of Pakistan in the peace process.

More than 500 young people from all over Pakistan including Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit Baltistan, Azad Jammu & Kashmir, Federally Administered Tribal Areas and Islamabad Capital Territory gathered at the 4th National Youth Peace Festival 2013 in Lahore from 26th – 28th September 2013.

The event was organized by Chanan Development Association CDA’ a national youth led organization, in collaboration with the United Nations Democracy Fund UNDEF, United States Agency for International Development USAID, Youth Peer Education Network YPEER & Karachi Youth Initiative with the theme “One Nation, One Agenda: Democracy & Peace”.

During the three days event, young people from diverse cultures, ethnicities, religions, communities, and socioeconomic background interacted with each other in a positive manner to understand their opinions, share their believes, and celebrate their diversity. All the young people expressed great patriotic spirit throughout the event and took pride in their identity being the citizens of Pakistan.

The young people also got the opportunity to directly interact with the leaders from civil society to express the issues they are facing in their communities as well as the solutions that can be implemented by the respective Governments.

The forum also acknowledged the contributions of people who have contributed for strengthening democracy in Pakistan.

The moot also endorsed the resolution of All Parties Conference to give dialogue a chance for creating peace in Pakistan, adding the writ of the State should not be compromised.

They also urged the NDMA to collaborate with youth led civil society organizations to establish district disaster risk reduction committees comprising of young people who can be at the forefront to volunteer their services for any unexpected disaster.
