Karachi: Eighth seed Zoya Khalid pulled a sensational upset when she defeated top seed Sadia Gul in the quarterfinals of 8th DG Rangers Sindh National Squash Championship 2014 underway here at Sindh Rangers Jahangir Khan Squash Complex.
Sadia started the match as favorite and took the first two sets to take a 2-0 lead. However, Zoya came from behind and won the next three sets to record a convincing 9-11, 9-11, 11-2, 11-5, 11-4 victory in 52 minutes.
In semifinals, Zoya will face fifth seed Saima Shoukat, who defeated Madina Zafar in straight sets by 11-2, 11-8, 12-10 score in 25 minutes.
Meanwhile, unseeded Riffat Khan took only 15 minutes to dispatch Aiman Shahbaz recording a formidable 11-5, 11-1, 11-5 victory.
Second seed Samar Anjum was taken to full stretch of the game by seventh seeded Roshane Mehboob before the former recorded a 9-11, 12-10, 10-12, 12-10, 11-4 triumph in 70 minutes.
In men’s quarterfinals, seventh seed Shaikh Saquib recovered from two sets deficit to stun second seed Farhan Zaman and recorded a 11-13, 14-16, 11-7, 11-8, 11-7 victory in 79 minutes, which was the longest match of the day.
Meanwhile, fifth seed Tayyab Aslam twice came from behind to upset third seeded experienced player Danish Atlas and recorded a 6-11, 11-7, 3-11, 11-6, 11-8 win in 78 minutes.
Unseeded Zahir Shah secured an unexpected berth in semifinals after he defeated veteran Mansoor Zaman by 11-9, 10-12, 6-11, 11-7, 11-7 score in 58 minutes.
Fourth seeded left-hander Farhan Mehboob dispatched eighth seed Ammad Farid recording a straight set 11-8, 11-3, 11-6 triumph in 27 minutes. Farhan will face giant-killer Shaikh Saquib in semifinals.
