Islamabad: A large number of angry Christian protestors on Monday staged the protest demonstrations and blocked D-Chowk, Zero Point, Islamabad Expressway near Iqbal Town, Benazir Bhutto Road, Mall Road, Airport Road and Peshawar Road and burnt the tyres to block the traffic on main roads resulting in disturbance of traffic while office going people suffered the most due to the long blockages.
In Twin cities protesters, carrying banners and placards, pelted stones on the public and private vehicles, raised slogans against the government and demanded an end to the terrorist activities.
They also blocked the main Islamabad Expressway due to which the school going children, office going and students suffer a lot and hence they used alternative routes in this regard. The Christians appealed to the federal and the provincial governments to provide them with foolproof security.
They also called for the payment of compensation to the families of the victims in addition to those who sustained injuries. All shops in Rawalpindi, particularly in Commercial Market, Sadar, Moti Bazaar, Bara Bazaar, China Market and Lalkurti remained closed as their owners feared mob attacks. A heavy contingent of the police and other the law enforcement agencies tried to control the situation.
Representatives of the Christian community said that the police neither provided them with security nor they took adequate arrangements for their protection.
The worst traffic jams were seen on Islamabad Expressway, Islamabad Highway, GT Road, Airport Road, Benazir Bhutto Road, Mall Road, Peshawar Road, Zero Point and Jinnah Avenue early Monday morning.
