Chilly weather badly affects guava orchid crop

LARKANA: Chilly weather has badly affected health of guava orchid crop in Larkana district, causing decline in production and loss to growers & traders.

The guava fruit of Larkana district is famous nationally and internationally. All the villages on the right bank of Indus River have vast guava orchids spread over thousands of acres where hundreds of thousands of laborers are employed to earn livelihood.

Sindh government’s announcement about establishing olive oil factory in the area has so far remained merely an announcement. The guava is packed in wooden crates. Hundreds of laborers are working to prepare these cartons. After packing, these cartons are transported to various areas of Pakistan including Karachi, Rahim Yar Khan, Quetta, Sadiq Abad, Multan, Hyderabad and Lahore, where people love to buy and eat this most digestive fruitful fruit.

A carton contains about 8 to 10 kg guava and it is being sold between Rs 500 to Rs 1000 depending on the quality, which according to the contractors and cultivators, is very cheap and they cannot even borne the costs.

People also send guava cartons to their friends, relatives and loved ones as annual gift throughout the country. There are many kinds of guava fruit and all are produced in the orchids located in Dodai, Mahotta, Naundero, Chooharpur, Agani, Metla, Izzat Ji Wandh, Phulpota and other villages.

Syed Siraj Rashidi and other growers told PPI that rising costs had added to their miseries. They said that though the government had reduced petroleum prices but transporters continued to charge old rates which had also added to their sufferings and it also proves government’s inability to establish its own writ.

Rashidi said that MNA Ayaz Soomro made fake promises several times in the past when he was the influential Sindh Law Minister that guava oil factory would be established in the area but nothing had been done as yet resulting in losses to the farmers. He demanded establishment of olive oil factory at the earliest which was promised by slain PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto during her lifetime.
