Wheat procurement centers still not established in Larkana

LARKANA; Wheat procurement centers still not established by Sindh food department, while bags have also not been provided to the growers who are worried for their crop due to damage caused during recent unexpected rains.

Wheat harvesting has already started in the district and the peasants are forced to sell their produce at cheaper rates to the private grain merchants. The fixed wheat rate is Rs 1300 per 40 kg, but the farmers are selling it at Rs 1100 due to non-availability of government procurement centers.

The growers are suffering loss of Rs 200 per each 40 kg. The food department officials told PPI here on Wednesday that 11 procurement centers have been approved for Larkana district and not a single has so far been established. They further said that 250,000 wheat bags target has been fixed for this district which will be achieved easily once centers are set up.

Food department sources disclosed that last years’ 172,000 bags are also lying un-lifted at the food department godowns here and incharge of this years’ procurement centers have not yet been notified, which has delayed the process.

Private grain merchants are earning millions of rupees daily in the province due to purchase of low rates as they will sell their stock on higher rates to the government centers when these are established at their fixed price. On the other hand, Siraj Rashidi, President, Chamber of Agriculture, said that a target of 1.9 million metric tons wheat has been reduced to 4 lac metric tons only in Larkana district.
