Court: SC orders for appointment of Commission in media accountability case

ISLAMABAD: Hearing a case pertaining to media accountability, a two member Supreme Court bench on Wednesday directed all the parties and their legal attorneys hold a meeting under the chairmanship of Syed Nayab Hassan Gardezi, Islamabad High Court Bar president, and evolve a consensus over appointment of a Commission to settle the issue of media accountability.

The bench comprising Justice Jawwad S. Khawaja and Justice Khilji Arif Hussain directed this while hearing a plea filed by senior journalists and tv anchorpersons Hamid Mir and Absar Alam seeking a Commission for accountability of media.

The court directed that the meeting be convened at the Supreme Court building under the chairmanship of Nayab Gardezi. The court further directed that the ‘Terms of Reference’ for the Commission, to be appointed, be reaffirmed. The court asked the parties to inform it about the outcome of the meeting today Thursday.

Hamid Mir told the court that one-man Commission could meet the objectives. During the hearing, the court noted that Terms of Reference would finally be determined by it SC. Meanwhile, the court adjourned further hearing for today Thursday.
