KWSB plans more water supply for Karachi, asks irrigation department to restore water releases to Haleji Lake

Karachi: Managing Director Karachi Water & Sewerage Board Misbahuddin Farid has requested the Department of Irrigation to restore the water supply to Haleji Lake through Jaam Branch in order to ensure an alternate source for Karachi.

M.D KW&SB made the request after a 7 hour visit of Haleji Lake. Deputy Managing Director Technical Services Iftikhar Ahmed Khan, Deputy Managing Director Planning Mashkoor ul Hasnain, Chief Engineer Bulk Zafar Palejo and other concerned officers were also present on this occasion.

M.D said that water supplied to Karachi is through one source Keenjhar Lake and now for summers KWSB is trying to establish alternate sources so that swift supply to the citizens of Karachi is ensured throughout the city.

He said to bring down the pressure on the Keenjhar source KWSB has requested Irrigation Department to restore water supply to Haleji Lake which has been disconnected for past many years. Furthermore, he said that Haleji Lake should be supplied with water from KW&SB Jaam Branch RD54 reservoir.

M.D KW&SB directed DMD Technical Services to improve the performance of Bulk Pumping Stations and increase their supply limit to ensure better supply. Increasing the water pumping limit of these stations would result in provision of additional water to the citizens.

He said that officers of KW&SB consider provision of water to more than 20 million citizens of Karachi their moral and religious duty as well. However, during the summers when water consumption increases we face difficulties to provide these citizens ample water, which is why we are striving to overcome the problem by establishing alternate water sources.

He hoped that with additional supply from Haleji Lake citizens of Karachi would not face any water shortage during the upcoming summers.
