Only taxpayers be allowed to get membership of chambers: NA body

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Commerce on Thursday recommended to the All Pakistan Anjuman-e-Tajran (APAT) that only regular taxpayers should be allowed to get membership of the district chambers of commerce and industries. Chairing a meeting of the committee here, Engineer KhurramDastgir Khan said that this was a great opportunity for setting up chambers at district level and it should be exploited positively for the promotion of small and medium enterprises operating at grassroot level. Apart from this, the business community should play a role for the economic development of the country by paying taxes, he added. KhawajaSohail Mansoor said that the chambers should not involve in the politics but they should rather enhance business activities.

The APAT representatives thanked the government and committee for establishing chambers of commerce and industries at district levels across the country by considering their demands in the recently passed Trade Bill.

Speaking in the meeting, APAT President Khawaja Shafiq said that the membership in the district chamber could only be possible, when he or she would be paying taxes regularly.

There is huge quantity of un-organized units operating across the country, which need to be organized and it will help generate huge revenue, he added.

The committee directed the ministry to provide copies of British Marine Insurance Act, 1906 and Indian Insurance Marine Act, 1963 and the proposed Marine Insurance Act alongwith comparative statement.

The committee passed the National Tariff Commission (Amendment Bill) 2012 unanimously without any amendment.

The Standing Committee proposed to have a joint sitting with the Standing Committee on Finance, Revenue and Planning and Development on the issue of import policy of used cars.

The meeting was attended by Nawab Abdul Ghani Talpur, Ch Iftikhar Nazir, Nauman Islam Sheikh, Liaqat Ali Khan, Mrs Tahira Aurangzeb, Shireen Arshad Khan, Hamid YarHiraj, Mrs Kashmala Tariq, KhwajaSohail Mansoor,Mrs Jamila Gilani, Hameed Ullah Jan Afridi, Qudsia Arshad, Shahnaz Saleem and Ch Asghar Ali Jatt.
