SC hears Gilani’s review plea against his disqualification on March 6

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court will hear on March 06 the review petition of former Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani against his conviction and disqualification in the contempt of court case.

The review petition will be heard by a three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry. On April 26, 2012, a seven member larger bench of the Supreme Court headed by Justice Nasirul Mulk had awarded a symbolic punishment to the then Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani on contempt charges.

Later, on June 19, 2012, the Supreme Court had declared Gilani disqualified from holding a seat in the parliament from the date of his conviction on April 26, 2012 by a seven member larger bench for contempt of court for not implementing its ruling in the National Reconciliation Ordinance NRO case.

Gilani had refused to write a letter to the Swiss authorities for reopening graft cases against President Asif Ali Zardari. The ruling had not only stripped Gilani of premiership, but he was also disqualified from contesting as a Member of National Assembly for five years.

Gilani had filed a review petition on Feb 2 against the Supreme Court’s ruling in the contempt case barring him from contesting elections and holding any public office for five years.
