Growth of Education only solution to all problems of Pakistan


KARACHI: Director International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences ICCBS, Karachi University KU Prof. Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Chaudhary has said that the expansion of Education is the only solution to all social and political problems of the country, while students and young scientists must play their due role in progress of the country.

“The ICCBS is known for its quality of research and international collaborations. It is the only institution in Pakistan where foreign students have been trained for their research projects. As many as 37 foreign students have got training to conduct research projects in the year 2012.

The countries from where students came include Turkey, Sudan, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, Nepal, Myanmar, Malaysia, Lebanon, Kazakhstan, Jordan, Iran, Scotland, Egypt, Cameron and Burkina Faso,” he said, while speaking at an international Workshop on “Bioinformatics Tools in Structural Biology” held at Dr. Panjwani Center for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research PCMD, Karachi University, in which participants from 10 different institutes, pertaining to different parts of the country took part to learn the modern tools and basic programming of bioinformatics. The workshop was inaugurated and concluded by Dr. Iqbal Chaudhary. PCMD has organised the international event.

Two eminent scientists, Dr. Hany Alashwal, Research Assistant Professor, Bioinformatics Core Coordinator, and Dr. Aftab Ahmed, Research Assistant Professor, Department of Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences, College of Pharmacy, University of Rhode Island, USA were the resource persons of this workshop. This 3 days workshop has covered the key concepts and tools required to create and execute programs of bioinformatics in order to expedite research and solve specific issues related to programming in bioinformatics. Dr. Iqbal Chaudhary said that Bioinformatics is one of the major and important fields of biological sciences that concerned with large databases of biochemical or pharmaceutical information.

Talking about the workshop, he said this kind of advanced workshop had never been conducted before in Pakistan and
we hope that the participants of the workshop will now be able to apply these tools in their research and train their colleagues and students. He said that participants of the workshop have gained experience in visualization and analysis tools of DNA and protein sequences and structures.
