ISESCO to hold regional workshop on Biosphere Reserves in Kazakhstan

Al-Farabi Kazakh National University will host a regional workshop on Biosphere Reserves, to be organized by the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) on September 24-26.

The workshop aims to discuss ways of strengthening management of biosphere reserves in the countries concerned, addressing the impacts of climate change on biodiversity, and identifying common regional priorities for climate change.

During the workshop, joint regional approaches will be developed for the implementation of the Lima Action Plan for UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Program and its World Network of Biosphere Reserves (2016-2025).

Participants in the workshop will discuss cooperative project ideas and joint efforts to enhance the capacity of the countries concerned to establish and manage their biosphere reserves in accordance with innovative approaches to conservation and sustainable development of biodiversity, as well as promoting sub-regional and regional cooperation at all levels.

The workshop will be attended by representatives from Egypt, Pakistan, Indonesia, Turkey, Iran, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, alongside the heads of Kazakhstan’s 10 nature reserves, national experts and representatives of key government agencies and local communities. Representatives of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), UN Development Program (UNDP) and International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), as well as a number of international experts, will also participate in the workshop.
