Islamabad: Rule of law is a prerequisite to democracy says Senator Pervaiz Rashid, Minister for Law, Justice & Human Rights in a meeting with representatives of various district bars on Tuesday.

He said that the present democratic Government of PML N is committed to turn Pakistan into a true democratic society based on genuine rule of law.

He said that the societies which are governed by law and constitution not only cherished all over but also provided equal opportunities for economic betterment and social development for the people.

Democracy thrives where no one is above law and even leaders are held accountable for their actions, the Minister emphasized.

He said that transparency, meritocracy & fairness had been the hallmark of present democratic dispensation.

It goes to the credit of the incumbent Government that not even a single case of financial irregularity or corruption came to the fore, Pervaiz Rashid added. He lamented that in the past grants were given to various bars on discriminatory basis.

The present Government will ensure the release of grants on the principle of equality and irrespective of any political affiliation, the Minister assured. He said “public money is like a trust and we cannot even think of breaching it”.

The Law Minister also applauded the role of legal fraternity in the historic lawyer movement which not only led to the independence of Judiciary but also proved instrumental in democratic transition from a dictatorial rule.

The Lawyers also expressed their various problems and concerns which the Minister assured to resolve at the earliest.

On the direction of the Law Minister, the Ministry distributed cheques among the representatives of various bars who came from all over the country. Total amount of 5 crore has been earmarked for all the District bars.

Barrister Zafar Ullah Khan, Secretary Law, Justice & Human Rights and Justice ® Muhammad Raza Khan, Special Secretary Law were also present in the meeting.
