Islamabad: United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Ms. Kyung-wha Kang, Special Advisor to United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Ms. Laila Bourhil, along with other delegates visited NDMA to assess the ground humanitarian situation and review the planning and efforts towards disaster management system in Pakistan.
The United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator Mr Timo Pakala and OCHA’s Officer in Charge Ms Annette Hearns were also present on the occasion. Brig Mirza Kamran Zia Acting Chairman NDMA, Mr Ahmed Kamal Member DRR, and key Directors of NDMA also attended the meeting.
The delegation was welcomed by Brig Mirza Kamran Zia and NDMA team. He also briefed the delegation on the disaster management system in Pakistan, Long-term DRR measures, preparedness/ planning for 2014 and also initiatives undertaken in collaboration with the United Nations system.
The Acting Chairman also dilated upon the shift of focus from a reactive and response oriented approach to a more proactive and Disaster Risk Reduction approach of NDMA to enhance disaster resilience of communities.
The Acting Chairman also thanked the United Nations and all its agencies for their valuable support rendered to Pakistan during various disasters.
The United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Ms. Kyung-wha Kang appreciated initiatives launched by NDMA, in various fields, to cope with any untoward situation.
She added that United Nations and humanitarian partners have been supportive of the Government of Pakistan in providing assistance to the affected communities and United Nations remains committed to extend all necessary support to Pakistan to improve its response and risk reduction related capacities.
