NA continue debate on drone attack in North Waziristan


Islamabad: In the National Assembly on Thursday the members from the treasury and opposition benches said the government should move ahead with the dialogue process with Taliban for bringing peace and stability in the country.

Continuing debate on the recent drone attack in North Waziristan Agency‚ they also called upon the Taliban to renounce violence and bloodshed.

The National Assembly is discussing the recent drone attack in North Waziristan.

Initiating the debate in the National Assembly Qari Muhammad Yusuf strongly criticized the US’s regional policy saying it has never fulfilled commitments made to Pakistan.

He said certain elements want to create a gulf between the people and the government and we should stand united to foil these designs.

He said peace can be restored in the region provided the US stops interfering in the internal matters of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Ayaz Soomro said the government should hold dialogue with the Taliban on the basis of principles and under the constitutional ambit.

He said the war against terrorism was imposed on us and collective efforts are required to bring peace and stability in the country.

Meanwhile, Rising on a point of order‚ Leader of the Opposition Syed Khurshid Ahmad Shah said they will not accept printing of ballot papers from private press for the Local Bodies Elections. This‚ he said‚ will raise question mark on the credibility of the Election Commission. He said holding local bodies elections is a political issue and it should be handled politically.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi said the schedule given by the Election Commission for Local Bodies elections is not implementable as the provinces have to undergo delimitation of constituencies.

Sharing the concerns of the opposition members on the election schedule of Local Bodies‚ Minister for Railways Khawaja Saad Rafiq said that relaxation in time should be given for the holding of free‚ fair and transparent local bodies elections in the four provinces‚ capital territory and cantonment areas.

He said all the provinces want to hold local bodies elections for transparent devolution of power at the grass roots level as per the constitutional requirement but the Election Commission is currently not prepared to hold the elections. He said the Supreme Court should consider the concerns of the elected representatives on the election schedule keeping in view the ground realities.

About Local Bodies Elections in cantonment areas‚ the Minister said a draft law has been prepared for the conduct of elections in cantonment areas.

Earlier‚ Minister for Science and Technology Zahid Hamid laid 2 Anti-terrorism (Amendment) Ordinance 2013 and Protection of Pakistan Ordinance 2013 before the House.
