242 profiteers fined, 24 jailed


KARACHI: In a crackdown on profiteers, after beginning of the holy Ramazan, 242 shopkeepers were charged with Rs 327000 fine for selling commodities above government rates.

Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui has said that the campaign launched against profiteers would continue till they ensured that the commodities were sold at fixed rates.

In the crackdown, 44 milkmen, 17 shopkeepers of general commodities, 33 chicken sellers, 93 vegetable sellers and 55 fruit sellers were fined for selling essential items at excessive prices, while 24 persons were sent to jail for continuous violation of official rates.
