KARACHI: Karachi Metropolitan Corporation Administrator Rauf Akhtar Farooqui said that traffic related problems in Karachi were mainly due to the rapid increase in traffic volume on roads and the bus rapid transit system was the only solution for this situation.
This he said while talking to a three member Asian Development Bank delegation led by its mission leader and Senior Urban Development Specialist David Margonszten, who called on Administrator Karachi in his office on Tuesday. Senior Director Transport & Communication Muhammad Athar and other officers were also present on this occasion.
The ADB delegation was working with the provincial government for the bus rapid transit project and its present visit was in connection with the preparation of feasibility report of the corridors selected for this project.
During the meeting the ADB delegation discussed with the Administrator Karachi, the role of KMC in the bus rapid transit project for Karachi.
Farooqui appraised the delegation about the traffic problems in the city. He said the city roads and corridors were becoming insufficient to accommodate the ever increasing traffic volume which was the result of high rate of increase in the city population.
He said various projects were made in past to deal with the transport and traffic problems in Karachi and according to the urban development experts the bus rapid transit system was the only solution for these problems which would not only provide better and convenient transport source to the public but also reduce the traffic volume on roads and minimize the air pollution.
Administrator said six bus rapid transit lines were suggested for Karachi after the initial feasibility of the project which includes blue line, brown line, green line, red line, yellow line, orange line and purple line.
“Urban development experts have reached the conclusion after a detailed research that bus rapid transit system is the only solution to Karachi’s transport issues, which will provide cheap and comfortable transport to citizens and as a result citizens would prefer buses over private vehicles,” he said.
He said all efforts would be made to provide a better and modern public transport system to the city of Karachi. The restoration of CNG bus service and the rerouting of transport in the central Saddar area were some of the measures which would help controlling the situation.
