KARACHI: Director Sindh Institute of Urology and transplantation (SIUT) Prof Adibul Hasan Rizvi has said that media and civil society organizations are not playing their due role to promote organ donation welfare work in Pakistan.
He told PPI: “A significant number of people die because of kidneys, liver, heart, lungs, and other organs failure every year and these precious lives can be saved if deceased organ donation is fully established in the country similar to other Muslim countries where hundreds of transplantations are being performed using organs from deceased donors.”
He said organ donation is a social responsibility which was successfully performed and practised in Iran, Egypt, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and other countries. He said media groups and civil society were reluctant to play their due social responsibility to promote organ donation welfare work in the country.
Rizvi said a construction of Transplant Tower was underway at SIUT and institution would begin transplantation of other organs soon. He said thousands of people would benefit after the completion of this project.
He said World Ulema Council and local religious scholars advocated the organ donations and transplantations so the society should take this cause as a social responsibility in order to promote organ donation welfare cause in the country. He said there was misinformation in society about organ donation and all segments should play their due role in this regard.
He said 10 million patients had been given treatment free of cost who were suffering from kidney and related diseases since inception of SIUT about 42 year ago. He said approximately one million patients were treated in nine medical centers established across the country in a year.
He stressed the need of awareness, organized plan, conveying message to public and training staff so as to enhance organ donation welfare.
He urged the civil society and media institutions to take these noble causes as social responsibility and play their due role in motivation of people to promote organ donation welfare to maximum level.
