Campaign kicked off: 0.3m saplings to be planted


KARACHI: Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui kicked off a tree plantation campaign, in which 0.3 million saplings would be planted across Karachi, on the occasion of Earth Day on Tuesday.

The saplings would be of local, indigenous and environment friendly trees, sourced from the provincial forest department.

The campaign was launched with tree plantation at Ramzan Goth near Hawksbay, in collaboration with a NGO that will plant 10,000 trees in the area over a period of 1 year, with the assistance of community. These would include fruit trees, vegetables and fodder crops. The aim is to plant 50000 saplings with the collaboration of various individuals, institutions and organizations, and monitor their growth to make Karachi green.

Siddiqui also interacted with the community members, listened to their problems. He directed assistant commissioner to resolve their issues regarding electricity supply, primary education and also directed to have their non-functional Reverse Osmosis Water filtration Plant repaired immediately.

He also directed the NGOs to undertake an awareness raising campaign regarding plantation for the residents of this over 250 hundred year old Goth.
