KARACHI: Karachi police on Thursday claimed to have busted a major extortionist group in the city, comprising of six people. Addressing a press conference at SSP East office, DIG East Munir Ahmed Shaikh said that SSP East Pir Muhammad Shah along with SP Gulshan-i-Iqbal arrested three people Mohamad Khalid Baloch, son of Deen Mohammad, Mohammad Yaseen, son of Mohammad Ismail and Mohammad Noman Tahir, son of Mohammad Tahir from Gulshan-e-Hadeed area of the city. They were accused of contacting at least 250 people for extortion money and receiving Rs 800,000 within two months in terms of extortion.
“Two of the accused were extortionists while Noman was an easypaisa shop owner who facilitated them in receiving money on fake identities. Three more members of the group were still on the run and police will soon arrest them,” he said.
The DIG East said that during initial investigations, the accused confessed to contact hundreds of people. “They even do not know as how many people they contacted during their last two years of criminal activities. They confessed of contacting 250 people during last four days which include doctors, bank officers, businessmen and others,” he said.
Explaining their way to commit crime, Shaikh said that initially they find a well-off person using social networking sites and then after getting his number they repeatedly call at their home in morning and try to take information regarding the family using fake identities.
He said that the gang was busted after a Gulshan resident, Mohamad Amjad, contacted police over threatening calls of extortion. The police reacted swiftly and after a brief interrogation, the criminals were arrested when they went to receive money from an Omni shop.
Police recovered 22 illegal SIMS and seven mobile phones from the possession of criminals while two TT pistol and a snatched motorcycle was also recovered from them.
He said that the group’s network was spread from Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Bohri Bazaar, Keamari and other parts of the city. They claimed to have associations with Ghaffar Zikri group of Lyari gangwar.
He said that two of the accused were earlier arrested by police in 2011 but they were released on bail by an anti-terrorist court.
In other actions by district East police, Shaikh said that a target killer Gul Hassan, son of Dost Mohammad Buledi Baloch, Lyari gang war criminal Gulla Khan, son of Gul Khan and two dacoits were arrested in the actions carried out by different police stations.
The DIG East said that Gul Hassan was wanted by police in several cases of killings, extortion and others in Malir City police station. The accused was also involved in killing a policeman, Ayub, in 2011. The police recovered an AK-47, two pistols and two grenades from his custody.
Another accused, Gulla Khan arrested over providing weaponry to Lyari gangwar criminals. An AK-47 and two grenades were recovered from his possession.
Moreover, Munir Shaikh refused to name two accused involved in carrying out dacoities within Shahrah-Faisal and Shah Faisal Colony and said that the police was also searching for their female accomplice who carry out reconnaissance of the houses and provide details regarding their inhabitants.
