Karachi: The teams from Lyari shined and stood tall at the culmination of the Karachi United Youth League as they grabbed the winning stand of two final matches out of three held on Sunday at KPT Football Stadium.
The Karachi United Youth Leaguewas organized by Karachi United Football Foundation (KUFF) and dedicated to “I am Karachi” which is a city-wide campaign by civil society organizationsto promote peace and positive activities in response to ongoing violence in the city. The youth league was divided into three groups;U12, U14&U16 and it featured teams from all twelve Karachi United centers across the city. The league lasted over six months with over 200 matches played amongst the centers.
The Under 12 final was held between LyariKakari and Baloch Star (Korangi). The match resulted in a 0-0 draw meaning that the champion was to be decided on penalties. LyariKakari became champion winning the penalty kicks 3-5.
The Under 14 final was held between LyariKakari and Agra Taj with Nadir from Lyari center scoring a quick-fire second half hat-trick to defeat Agra Taj. Agra Taj had a few efforts but they were unable to counter Lyari’s attacking play in the second half.
The Under 16 final was held between Malir and Old Golimar. A solitary, yet beautifully executed 30-yard free kick from Malir’s Junaid was the deciding factor in this contest. Old Golimar threatened to equalize in the second half with one effort hitting the cross bar but was unable to convert despite multiple efforts.
The final was attended by Pakistan football legends including FIFA instructor Siddique Sheikh, Pakistani Team Coach Hassan Baloch, Renowned Pakistani footballer Ali Nawaz, Pakistan Railways Coach Abdul Rasheed and Secretary South Football Association Gulab Baloch.
Karachi United Football Foundation has been working on football and development at grassrootssince 1996. All Karachi United centers across the city provide free coaching to over 2000 children on a weekly basis; in addition to supplementing education, health clinics and life skills in the respective communities. Karachi United centers are located in Malir, Korangi, Lyari, Mangohphir, Orangi Town, Baldia, Mauripur, Nazimabad and Old Golimar.
