MCs soon to implement Child Marriage Act

KARACHI; Secretary Women Development Department Abdul Rasheed Solangi said on Wednesday that a Monitoring Committees will be set up in every district of Sindh to ensure implementation of the Child Marriage Act.

This he said while addressing a training workshop organized by Women Development Department in collaboration with UNICEF for providing awareness about the adverse effect of early child marriages at a local hotel.

The workshop was attended by 15 police officers, 15 advocates, NGOs and officers of the department. The secretary said that marriage laws of 1929 have been replaced by new laws which enhanced the marriage age from 16 to 18 years and violation in this regard is punishable for 2 to 3 years with rigorous imprisonment and fine.

Solangi said that the district women development officer will be secretary of monitoring committee in every district, while deputy commissioner will be its chairman.

He further said that district women development officer will lodge an FIR at police station for violation of marriage laws.

Coordinator UNICEF Dr Jabeen, representatives of Aurat Foundation, Home Net and others also spoke on the occasion.
