PTI to protest against hike in power tariff


KARACHI: Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI) on Wednesday warned federal government of protest across the country and at the floor of parliament if they would increase electricity tariff rates.

Addressing a press conference at PTI office in Karachi along with PTI leaders Dr. Arif Alvi, Khurram Sher Zaman, Nadir Akmal Laghari, the party’s central leader and MNA Asad Umar said that Nawaz Sharif announced to resolve electricity crises as his top priority during Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) election campaign, however, the government’s wrong decisions increased the energy crises.

He said that the government had planned to increase electricity tariff from mid of July and PTI would strongly oppose this step. “We have observed government policies for one year but the government failed to overcome energy crisis, therefore the party had decided to bring people on roads in the interest of common man,” he said.

“Circular debt has increased up to Rs480 billion while Pakistan State Oil (PSO) has been defaulted first time in the history of Pakistan,” he said adding that the government was unable to handle worst situation.

He said the during the first tenure of the Benazir Bhutto government, PML-N used to criticize Benazir for signing agreement with Independent power projects (IPPs) but now they are following the same path and signed agreement with IPPs and have to planned to purchase electricity with high tariff.

“The PML-N government has broken all records of corruption while the Punjab chief minister on behalf of federal government is visiting around the world and signing agreements” he alleged adding that in the future, people of the country would have to pay Rs 300 to 400 billion to IPPs besides facing 16 to 17 hours the worst crisis of electricity.

He said the PTI leadership including Imran Khan strongly enforced that PTI do not want to derail the democratic government, because it was attained after long struggle, but federal government itself trying de-rail the government by making wrong policies.
